How Environmental Justice Screening Works

What is environmental justice screening?

This screening combines reported toxic chemical releases, health-based SDWIS records, Superfund sites, and TRI carcinogen reporting. It helps prioritize where to inspect source records; it does not measure an individual's exposure, health risk, or current drinking-water safety.

How is the environmental burden score calculated?

The score uses percentile ranking across four rates: toxic releases per capita (35% weight), health-based SDWIS records per active community water system (25%), Superfund sites per 100,000 residents (20%), and carcinogen-facility share of TRI reporters (20%).
